In 1976 while training to be a financial advisor, I inadvertently drew a cartoon. Before I knew it, I had a real hobby! About 5 years later I met The Toad. What a motivator. He inspired me to name my cartoon Toad Suck Country so I might be able to get it published. Sure enough I then had 20 papers running my cartoons. In 1995, my cartoon placed third in the Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Arkansas Press Association. I then published three books of my cartoons.
In 1986 I bought the building at Oak and Front Streets in Conway. The Toad suggested I name it Toad Suck Square. Overnight, it became a landmark. Ten years ago, for the annual Toad Suck Daze celebration, the Toad pointed out that there was a void and a desperate need for a kazoo band. So, with the help of city councilman, Woody Cummins and Corp. Executive, Jerry Adams, we organized the Toadly Awesome Toad Suck Drum and Kazoo Corp. Every year we lead the Toad Suck Daze parade with other sophisticated music lovers with our theme song, “When the Toads go Marching in.”
In recent years, I only furnished my cartoons to a few newspapers due to my business obligations. Since retiring and acting upon my entrepreneurial instincts, I am now able to pursue syndicating a new daily cartoon published in the local paper, the Log Cabin Democrat. It is called Toad Suck Tidbits and from the responses I’m getting, I have a real winner!
